1908 Historical Tugboat EXCALIBER
Excaliber is a classic wooden Tug , 93 feet long and 220 Tons.
She was built at Wallace shipyard in Vancouver B.C. in 1908.
She  hails from the Port Orchard Marina in Wa.
Andrea McDonald is her owner ( slave) and Captain.
She has had a few names in 100 years.
She started out as the OSPREY VII in 1908 as a Steam powered Tug for B.C. Packers. She was bought by Vancouver Tug and Tow ( now Seaspan) and renamed LE MARS and was converted to Diesel in 1935.
Her biggest claim to fame was when  in 1969 she was bought by one of the few black Captains Paul Bellesen Sr. and named the
S.S. LANGSTON HUGHES training ship for boys 9-14.
Paul was a godsend to these kids and took them under his wing.
Taught them the skills of a mariner and showed them another way of life and joined together many for a lifelong friendship.
In 1973 she was the Ellen E for only a few months then in 1974 she became EXCALIBER.
She towed log booms as Le Mars from Vancouver to Alaska.
She towed salt barges from Mexico to California I believe as Excaliber and somehow ended up a ferry for the El Salvadorian government.
So im told by the Vancouver Maritime Museum anyway.
We know she got busted for running drugs ( Grandma was a bad, bad Tug !!!) and was seized by the U.S. Feds.
Its a long story how she became mine but you can read the Seattle Times article at the link below.
Excaliber and the famous Arthur Foss have a great history together as well and were runited at the Center for Wood Boats show in Seattle July 2008.
More on that below.
Excaliber went to Olympia as well for Harbor days. More on that as well below !!

Excaliber and Arthur were reunited after 39 years apart. Both of these boats were taken by the Langston crew in 69, got old Arthurs amazing Wa. iron works slow speed diesel to run again. The kids ran these two together.
Without them, neither of these great vessels would still be floating and it would have been a huge loss to our maritime community.
I did lots of make up on Grandma for her date with her old buddy Arthur.
We did a horn duo at noon with the ringing of the historic Swiftsures big bell, then our Steam whistle and Arhturs big, deep bass horn. It was terrific !!
My dream is to see these two Tugs underway together again someday.
Excaliber and I LOVE YOU ARTHUR !!!!!  We miss you !!!!

Lots of room in my heart for both Tugs !!! These two mean the world to me.

EXCALIBER AND GLEANER BOTH  1908 wood Tugs Together !!!
Excaliber may 2008 with just the start of her new paint job completed.
By August I got more paint on her old ass!!!
She is starting to look the way I saw her in my mind when I bought her.
Good to have strong sons !!
Everyone told me I could not tow with a 100 year old wood Tug.  OH YEA !!!   Watch this !!! We dont even have a tow bit in the proper place ( or one at all actually) and are not pulling our full engine power right now. Which is only 300 horse anyway.  Wish I had that old slow speed back. We could kick some serious butt with that thing.  She has a very fast, narrow hull.
But Grandma still managed to pull the HUGE ex Navy ATA /ex Coast Guard cutter the COMANCHE.  Backwards nor less which is real pain in the ass too.
She was light on fuel in the bow, and with no boat in front to steady her it was  REAL interesting !!! Did I mention it was also in a narrow channel with tons of other boats on both sides? It was quite the site and everyone was very entertained that day.
Ever since I got the old girl I kept saying .... I WANT TO TOW SOMETHING !!! Anything !!
I did not  have something THAT large in mind though !!!
Photo of the Comanche when she was a cutter below. That is one BIG ship !!!
EXCALIBER AND GLEANER together at Harbor days 2008.
Gleaner was also a 1908 Steam tug. She was also the Erik Foss .
We have been adopted by Ellen and Mike and Grandma who live on her just like I do . They came to my marina for the winter. They have become the family I did not have. I love them SOOOO much as well as thier beautiful tug. Excaliber took quite the liking to Gleaner too !!!
When they leave for AK Im going to be so lost without them now.
Us Tugboat folk really stick together.
EXCALIBER Racing, Harbor Days 2008
1929 Tug CHIEF visiting EXCALIBER.
Chief has a 8 cylinder inline Enterprise slow speed, still Direct Reverse and no one on earth can handle that old girl like her Capt. Christian Lint who is one of my closest and most adored friends.
Capt. Chris got stuck in Alaska in the ice while working a tow. He had ole Chief Anchored in front of his own house in Lakebay. But the damn DNR decided to charge him 1200 a month to drop the hook . What has this world come to?
We went over and got her, took 10 hours all through the night with no moon and lots of rain and cold.  We lost one engine on the GB we were towing Chief with.
Had to fire up Chiefs wonderful engine and put her at slow ahead and use the GB to steer as Chief's rudder was stuck at that time. Right when this photo was taken we shut down Chief and I went to back down with the GB to push her to the dock and I had NO engines at all on the GB running !! But got the one remaining one fired back up in time to land this tow like we actually knew what we were doing !!!
Nothing like the adventures you can have messing with old Tugboats.
Oh, now the DNR is trying to run the Comanche ( look to the left) that we towed out of where they are anchored as well.  A historical non profit ship trying to do some good in the world and there is no place for her either anymore. What a bunch of WIENIES !!! who really need to get a real life and leave us alone damn it !!!
Fall 2008, now in 2009 those aft bars on the stern have been cut off.. Looks much better !!
July of 2009
The Gleaner on the hard July 2009
You just have to love these old ships a lot to do this stuff ! My girls helped out to. I was scared of the eel fish that kept falling out of the muscles . YUCK !!!
This is Mike who owns the Gleaner, old barnacle face himself ! after pressure washing.

Oh come on guys.. its not THAT bad !!!
